SHARON (KDKA) – A 2-year-old Mercer County boy, who was reported missing and later found in an Ohio pool, has died.
Police say 2-year-old Annakin Gammon and his 5-year-old brother were reported missing Sunday evening from their family home on Lafayette Street in Sharon.
"I seen the mom, and I thought she had lost her dog," one neighbor said. "I said, 'What are you looking for?' and she's looking for her kids."
Neighbors say the entire community joined the search. The 5-year-old, who police have not identified, is reported to be non-verbal and autistic. He was spotted a few blocks from the family home.
"A couple hundred, 300, local people were looking," neighbor James Gramsky said. "Four, five departments between fire and police showed up. Couldn't find him until after dark."
Annakin was discovered floating in a backyard pool in the next town – Masury, Ohio. The pool is surrounded by a gate, and the homeowners say they have no idea how the boy ended up there.
"The fireman carried him out and gave him CPR," the homeowner said. "I don't know what happened. I wish I had drained the pool."
Searchers and medics attempted CPR at the scene, but Annakin died at a local hospital. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
Early Monday morning, they searched the family home wearing hazmat suits, leaving neighbors with a lot of questions.
The results of the autopsy will be reported sometime Tuesday.
