2 Workers Injured In Millvale Building Collapse

MILLVALE (KDKA) – Two construction workers were injured when a Millvale building collapsed Tuesday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the collapse happened near the intersection of Grant Avenue between Sherman and Hays Streets around 9:50 a.m.

Five workers from Interthal Contracting were standing on the second-floor ledge, demolishing the façade when bricks started coming loose. Two of the workers were seriously injured in the collapse and taken to Allegheny General Hospital for treatment.

One suffered serious head injuries and the other had multiple fractures.

"One gentlemen had a significant head injury. He was conscious and talking to us. I would consider him serious. The second gentleman had multiple fractures and was a little more serious. He was not responding very well, so a little concerned about him," Ross/West View EMS Assistant Chief Greg Porter said.

Dylan Ellison is a volunteer firefighter with the Millvale Volunteer Fire Department. He was out running close by when he got the call about the collapse on his cell phone.

"I saw that one person had a head injury. It was bleeding pretty bad. One also was still down over by the structure," said Ellison. "It was pretty bad. I didn't expect it to be that bad. It was like the whole top wall of the building fell. They had trouble getting him onto the stretcher."

According to officials, the building has been vacant for years and has been determined to be structurally sound.

"The building is in good shape. It was just the decorative brick on the front that came off," said Assistant Chief Porter.

Fire officials said Interthal Contracting had been working on the building for two days.

An OSHA inspector and the borough's code enforcement officer will determine when it is safe for the men to resume working.
