Memorial Grows For Murdered Canonsburg Officer & Pregnant Woman

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A memorial continues to grow in Canonsburg after a police officer and a pregnant woman were shot and killed, and a second officer was wounded.

Heartfelt they arrived, momentos from the grateful, to honor those lost and those hurting.

"It's amazing, this community really came together in this and it's just so heartbreaking," said Heather Graham.

In the sea of flowers, a child's word of thanks, spiritual support, support for the police, notes to Scott Bashioum's family, as well as pictures of the fallen officer, his wife Ashley, and his kids.

"A pure example of community, of faith and how and what Canonsburg stands for, when you're down the people pick you back up," said Canonsburg Mayor David Rhome.

Mayor Rhome said, for now, Canonsburg officers are off the streets, helping make the plans to honor their fallen brother. Their neighbors are keeping things safe.

"We have North Strabane, Cecil, Houston Boro, Peters Township and others who are patrolling our community until we can get the final process moving where we can get our people back on their line of duty," he said.

Meanwhile the memorial keeps growing, as people are drawn by grief.

"I think it's terrible that it happened and I pray for his family and his friends and his children," said Beth Matheny.

Veterans came from their parades to pay their respects.

"It's devastating to see our police officers have their lives taken needlessly," said Dean Virgili.
