McGuire Doubles In First Pirates At Bat
BRADENTON, Fla. (93-7 THE FAN) -- The Pirates first round pick in 2013 Reese McGuire thought he was just coming over to McKechnie Field Saturday to work as a bullpen catcher, but he ended getting to pinch-hit in the major league game and doubled in his only at bat.
The lefty-hitting McGuire said it was "awesome" as he lined a double down the line in right scoring Sean Rodriguez. The 20-year-old catcher did take a moment to cherish the experience.
"It helped that the pitcher ended up being replaced, I got a chance to be out there (at 2nd base) by myself and just take a look around and soak it all in," McGuire told KDKA Radio. "It was awesome, I loved it."
McGuire hit .262 in his first full year in the minors with Low A West Virginia in 2014 with 45 RBI. The Seattle native also had hits in 9 of his last 11 games and knows better what to expect this year.
"All these guys are the same, we're all baseball players, we're all living the dream," McGuire said of being around the major leaguers. "Whether here or in the minors, we're getting to play baseball for a job and not take it for granted. These guys are awesome. This club is so close, up and down through the system, great guys. Awesome baseball players, but better dudes and that's what's cool."
