Crews called to massive house fire in Pittsburgh area
SHALER, Pa. (KDKA) — Crews responded to a large house fire in Shaler on Monday evening.
First responders were called to the house on Hawthorne Road for the large blaze at around 5:30 p.m. No one was home when the fire broke out, and there were no injuries.
Firefighters from Cherry City and seven nearby volunteer crews came to help fight the flames on Monday.
"It went to a second alarm. We had multiple crews from Shaler, Ross, Millvale, Etna that assisted us," said Nick Skalos, chief of the Cherry City Volunteer Fire Company. "We appreciate their help."
The garage was the first part of the home to be completely engulfed by flames. Then, a vehicle in the garage exploded.
"The explosion was from the gas tank of the vehicle inside," Skalos said.
It took crews about 90 minutes to stop the flames. The fire is under investigation.
