Police: Fatal Shooting In Penn Hills May Have Been Over Drug Deal

PENN HILLS (KDKA) -- Allegheny County Police have arrested two men believed to have been involved in a fatal, mid-afternoon shooting Wednesday in Penn Hills.

18-year-old Traevon Nicholson, and 18-year-old Marshall Thompson are both in custody in connection with the shooting.

It all started around 2:30 p.m. when Penn Hills Police got a call about gunfire on Third Street, just off of the 4800-block of Verona Road.

The victim, 21-year-old Jose Fernandez, was found near a Park 'N Ride lot.

According to Allegheny County Police, Fernandez suffered one gunshot wound to the torso.

He was discovered lying near his car, which had Florida license plates, so it could have been a rental vehicle.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lt. Andrew Shurman told reporters "there was a potential that this was a drug deal, and the [likelihood] of a robbery was very high."

Debbi Kuntz of Penn Hills, whose car was parked in the same lot where the victim's car was found, couldn't return to her vehicle immediately after work. Police told her that the area was a crime scene.

Kuntz told KDKA-TV News, "I could see a white sheet lying in front of my car, and that's when it hits you. It's awful. You can't imagine that happening in a place where you park every single day."

The investigation continues.
