"He was inside the hopper and the gravel was loaded into the hopper with him in it," said Iselin/West Lebanon VFC Chief Bryan Schirato.

After significant effort, the man's body was eventually recovered.

The tragedy is taking its toll on both rescuers and fellow employees.

"It's pretty tough. We have a state police chaplain on the scene," Schirato said.

On Saturday morning, the Indiana County Coroner's Office identified the man as 39-year-old Eric Konlosky Sr., of Indiana.

The cause of death was determined to be compression asphyxia and the cause was determined to be accidental.

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating.

"We do not suspect any foul play this was just a tragic workplace accident today," Trooper Clifford Greenfield said.
