Man stabbed to death inside North Side home
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A man was stabbed to death inside a home on Pittsburgh's North Side on Sunday night.
According to Pittsburgh Police, The stabbing happened during an apparent domestic dispute along Suismon Street.
The man was found in the basement of the home and had been stabbed multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"It was definitely traumatizing," said neighbor Angela Lungu.
Lungu is renting an Airbnb next door with her young son and says it was around 8:00 p.m. Sunday when she heard a loud commotion coming from inside a nearby red house. Moments later, she says the police arrived.
"We saw police; they were running behind like they were chasing someone, and the next thing we saw was an ambulance. The street was closed up, and the next thing we saw was tape, and we were told to stay indoors," Lungu added.
According to the criminal complaint, when officers entered the home, they found the victim, identified as Luis Soto, lying on the floor in the basement, dead from multiple stab wounds.
Police say Soto and the suspect, 33-year-old Martin Lopez Hernandez, got into a physical altercation during a New Year's Eve celebration when Lopez allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Soto. The pair were roommates.
"Police were outside for three to four hours, and they were looking for someone. This person had run behind the kitchen door. So, it was very traumatizing. We had police flashlights all over. And being that it was the last day of the year, we were trying to go for a midnight service, [and] we couldn't go outside because of what was happening."
Hernandez is charged with criminal homicide and is being held in the Allegheny County Jail.
