Police: Man shoots, kills himself inside Center Township police vehicle
CENTER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) - A man is dead after state police said he shot himself inside a Center Township police vehicle on Friday.
The Beaver County district attorney said Center Township officers served a search warrant at a home on Geneva Drive shortly after noon and took a man into custody.
Sources said the man resisted arrest and had a gun. Police disarmed him, handcuffed him, then put him inside the police vehicle.
On the way to the police station, the district attorney said the man shot a gun, then died.
Police have not said how the man got a gun inside the car.
Police set up a perimeter along Brodhead Rod near Pleasant Drive while investigating. Because the man died in police custody, the district attorney said township police referred the case to state police.
A neighbor working outside his home told KDKA's Jennifer Borrasso he saw a police cruiser, heard one gunshot, then saw police pull a man out of the car.
"We saw the police tape and after that, we didn't really know what was going on," Rich Roy said. "Saw the yellow blanket go out, so we figured somebody may have passed."
The coroner will release the man's identity once the forensic investigation is complete and his family is notified. Police didn't give any other details about the warrant or why he was arrested.
No officers involved will be identified during the investigation, the district attorney said.
