Man recovering after being shot in the head in the South Side early on Sunday morning
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A man is recovering after an early-morning shooting on the South Side.
According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, just before 3 a.m., they were called to the 1200 block of East Carson Street for a ShotSpotter notification.
When officers arrived, they were informed by a bystander that a man had been shot near Roland Way and S. 13th Street. It was there they found the man in a doorway with a possible graze wound to his head and blood coming from his mouth.
The man, who has not been identified by law enforcement, told police that he and his girlfriend were fighting with another group of people when someone fired two shots at him. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Witnesses said the suspects fled in a silver vehicle.
South Side residents KDKA spoke with all hate that things like this keep happening in their neighborhood.
Folks like Ryan Smith told us that he doesn't feel unsafe on the South Side, but he also said that he feels like a lot of this violence is being done by people who don't live in the neighborhood and are just looking for trouble.
"I hate to say it, but these people are making poor decisions, and they are coming down here, and it is affecting the rest of us," Smith said. "You're not having random people getting hurt. It's usually people who have problems with other people coming to find those people and they happen to be down here."
Rico Barakat, a South Side business owner and landlord, agrees that the problems they are seeing in the neighborhood start elsewhere and end up here. He says it wasn't always like this.
"It's really sad. Nobody wants to go to the South Side. I lived in the South Side for 20 years," Barakat added. "If you remember, back in the day, just 10 years ago, beautiful, five-star restaurants. Friends and family visit from out of town, [and] you bring them to the South Side. Not anymore."
Regardless of where this violence starts, these South Side residents want it to end because they love their community and hope the city can and will do more.
"Truthfully, I hope something will happen. Something needs to happen."
Pittsburgh police are investigating this incident.
