Man In Stable Condition After Homewood Shooting

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A man was rushed to the hospital following a shooting in Homewood on Sunday.

Police say it happened in the 700 block of Formosa Way around 8 p.m. The victim was able to make it to a vacant lot at North Homewood and Hamilton Avenues before collapsing.

Police say the 19-year-old man was shot in the chest. He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian in critical condition, but was later upgraded to stable.

James Weathers told KDKA he heard gunshots ring out.

"It was like four or five shots, and they were strong shots too," he said.

Ashia Sims said she also heard the gunshots, and she recognized the victim.

"I saw someone running and they collapsed in the grass. I happened to run over there and it was someone I went to school with. So I stayed there and waited 'til the ambulance came," Sims said.

She explained why she didn't want to leave.

"I got shot before, so I know the feeling of what he had to just go through. Once I even realized who it was, I couldn't leave him alone, because I wasn't left alone," she said.

A man who fled the scene was tasered after refusing commands from officers to stop. He was taken to UPMC Mercy hospital to have the prongs removed. There is no word if the man is a suspect in the shooting.

An officer suffered brush burns when he fell while pursuing the man.
