Man & Dog Fatally Shot During Home Invasion In Crafton Heights

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police say one man was killed in a home invasion and shooting late Tuesday night in Crafton Heights.

There was a heavy police presence near a home in the 1300 block of Steuben Street around 11 p.m.

According to police, two suspects entered the home through a back door.

Thomas Cheeks, 40, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene.  Police say the suspects fatally shot a family dog before shooting Cheeks.

"We believe there were two males who entered through the rear entrance of the home," Pittsburgh Public Safety Spokeswoman Sonya Toler said. "We have a male in the home who has been fatally shot in the chest. So, this is a home invasion and homicide investigation."

Authorities says the victim's wife and 14-year-old son were home at the time of the incident, but they did not witness the shooting. They were not hurt.
