Man Accused In Hit And Run Injuring Elderly Woman Headed To Trial

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police say a man hit an elderly woman and took off, but he was caught.

Now he'll go on trial on several charges, including aggravated assault by vehicle.

The woman was seriously injured.

Mary Randall, 82, was Christmas shopping for her grandchildren at the businesses along Lyle Boulevard in McKeesport on Dec. 6.

She was in the crosswalk when the impact from a vehicle sent her onto the hood and over the roof of the car.

Police say 26-year-old Justin Warman was behind the wheel and didn't stop. Investigators caught up with him five days later as Randall lay in the ICU, her leg amputated.

"My mom, being 82 years old, and to never have to spend a day in the hospital in her life, at this state, you know, it's devastating," said the victim's son, Dave Singleton.

Warman signed an admission, even apologized at his arraignment, but his attorney has big issues with the identification of his client.

"Well, the admission that he signed, initially he denied any involvement," said defense attorney Ryan Tutera. "And you have the police officer admitting that it wasn't until he continued to push and interrogate, and while my client was crying, after he denied it, then he finally admitted it."

"The young man has some issues, I think we all realize that, and he made a mistake, he made several mistakes here, but still admission that he made to the police and his acknowledgement that he was sorry to the family, you know, it means something to us, yes it does," said the victim's other son John Singleton.

Surveillance footage from a nearby Eat 'n' Park restaurant helped police find Warman's Geo Prism. They even found hair and blood on the dashboard, enough evidence to send the case to the next level.
