PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- An electrical problem knocked out power to the Mall at Robinson and other businesses in the area Friday night.
Just before 7 p.m., the lights began to flicker in the mall, eventually leaving shoppers and employees in the dark.
"I really don't know. Just smelled smoke and they're evacuating and trying to figure out where it's coming from," store owner Neil Nichols said.
There are reports that a rooftop generator began sparking and then smoke filled the mall.
"Power went out about 6:45 p.m. About 7:15 p.m., we could smell smoke and then they told us it's time to evacuate," mall employee Lynne Snyder said.
Hundreds of shoppers and employees were then evacuated. Everyone got out of the building safely.
"It went pretty well. These guys are professionals. They know what they're doing. It went pretty well, so we're just hanging out and trying to figure out what we need to do next," Nichols said.
Other businesses and restaurants in the surrounding area also lost power.
Duquesne Light was sent to the scene to try to determine the cause of the outage.
Power was restored sometime after 10 p.m.
