Local veterans to take part in Purple Heart monument dedication in South Park

Monument dedicated to veterans for Purple Heart Day

SOUTH PARK TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - Today is National Purple Heart Day, a day to remember and honor those who were wounded or killed while serving the armed forces.

Several local veterans organizations hosted a dedication ceremony for a new Purple Heart Monument in South Park.

The monument was in development for over a year and was a collaborative effort between the aforementioned veterans' groups and community organizations.

Local veterans said they're excited to see the first monument dedicated to veterans in South Park.

"When the idea was first brought, up everyone jumped on board," said Vietnam War veteran, Rich Evans. "I can assure you, I can speak for veterans in that I think we are very proud to have served our country," Evans added.

It will be located off of Corrigan Drive near the Nurses Memorial and the Children's Playground.
