Local Organization Taking In Central American Refugees
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – You've seen them on the national news and heard of their perilous journeys across the desert, fleeing drug-invested and poverty-stricken Central America.
As many as 90,000 refugees, many of them teenagers or younger, have attempted to cross the border to find opportunity and sanctuary in the US.
And now about two dozen of them may find shelter at the Holy Family Institute in Emsworth.
Sister Linda Yankoski says the federal government has approved her request to become a shelter for refugee children.
The institute took in orphans after the Haitian earthquake and will continue to take Central American refugees.
Their arrival has inflamed passions on both sides of the immigration debate.
Sister Linda says she realizes the community may have other concerns, which she hopes to address.
Hopefully, Holy Family can play at least some small role.
