Local DJ Broadcasts From Box For Salvation Army Fundraiser

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- There were some double takes at PPG Place when visitors encountered a man in a box Tuesday afternoon.

Flick, a DJ at 100.7 Star FM, will broadcast from the see-through container from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day, through Thursday.

At night he'll sleep in a Salvation Army shelter.

"Me being in here, this could be anybody who ends up homeless," he explains.

The "man in a box" is a fundraising effort for the Salvation Army.

"I've been under bridges, in the city, with them to feed the homeless," Flick recalls. "And you think you know what compassion is until you see something like that. And then you realize that you absolutely have no clue."

Volunteer Mary Grenen rings her bell as a Salvation Army kettle, taking donations for the homeless.

"Surprisingly, volunteering here today, I've noticed that a number of people who've been donating said they've actually received this kind of help in the past," she says.

Passerby Suzanne Mary, of Finleyvlle, empathized with the cause, saying, "He has a home to go to when he is finished. The important thing is that people who are homeless have no home, and there's no excuse for that in this country."

Dimensions of the box are eight-by-four-by-eight.

"I'm only eating what the Salvation Army would supply to someone who is homeless," Flick says. "Crackers and some granola bars."

Pointing at an upside down bucket, he adds, "And this is my couch, furnished by Home Depot."

Wednesday's forecast: even colder. But the DJ says the real heroes are the volunteers.

"They do it because it's the right thing to do," he said.
