Local Communities Come Together On Good Friday

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Two local communities marked Good Friday with traditions.

In Etna, multiple churches gathered together to carry the cross.

"Today on the Christian calendar, we commemorate the death of Jesus, his death on the cross," said Calvert Memorial Presbyterian Church Pastor P.J. Pfeuffer. "Keeping this observance, we the churches of Etna know that the cross is what unifies us."

The procession moves through the streets and up the steep hill, every step helping those carrying the cross, following behind and lining the streets, to remember the final steps of Jesus.

"Every year we come and we like to go through the walk with the cross up the hill just like Jesus did so many years ago," said Janene Duty of Etna.

In Homewood, residents observed Good Friday in another way: with a peace march.

Community members showed up carrying signs, photos of relatives lost to violence and umbrellas to ward off the drizzle. Hundreds took to the streets of Homewood to march for peace.

"With all of the violence and everything that has been going on in Homewood and surrounding areas, I felt the need to, well, it was put on me, to take it and keep it going because we need to bring the community back together," said Adoration Boyd, a peace march organizer.

Adoration is a member of Bikes Up, Guns Down.

She says there are a lot of good people in her community who go in their homes, close their doors and stay sheltered. She wants them to know their neighbors and have, what she calls, neighbor-to-neighbor talk and block-to-block togetherness.
