Local Charity Sends Medical Supplies To Countries In Need

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A Pittsburgh-based charity is helping out people in need all around the world. Brother's Brother is sending medical supplies and equipment to three different continents.

The truck is being loaded and soon all of it will be sent to Honduras in Central America. The container is filled with more than 34,000 bottles of much-needed antibiotics and other medications. These special drugs were requested by clinics and hospitals in Honduras.

"It ranges from life-enhancing, if you're sick and you want medicines to get better, and for some it may be life-saving," Luke Hingston of Brother's Brother Foundation said.

It's not just medications being shipped out. Medical equipment is also being sent to Ghana, things like scales, mattresses, even baby bassinets.

The supplies will be sent by ship and then distributed to five or six hospitals in West Africa.

"If you send a hospital bed, that potentially is for years -- many, many patients over years," Hingston said. "So it's a part of a routine. These are poor people, living in poor countries, and we're just helping."

A third stash with more than 7,000 bottles of antibiotics and other medications will be flown to Argentina. Each year, Brother's Brother sends aid to people in as many as 60 countries a year. Te foundation relies on donations from the general public, corporations, foundations and hospitals across the nation.

Soon, supplies will be sent to some of the areas hit hard by the recent Ebola outbreak.

You can donate to Brother's Brothers online or by calling the foundation.
