Local Charities Thankful For 'Giving Tuesday'
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - For the past five years, the day after Cyber Monday has been known as Giving Tuesday. It is a way for people to donate to their favorite charity and there are many Pittsburgh charities that need your help.
Two of them, Providence Connections and Work Force Global Development Alliance joined the "KDKA Morning News" to talk about the work they do and how important Giving Tuesday is to them.
Samantha Ellwood, Executive Director for Providence Connections, says the organization started after Divine Providence hospital closed on the North Side. As a result, the Sister of Divine Providence, "wanted a way they could still support families and the communities."
Ellwood says they support over 400 families and children through serving food to those in need as well as, "adult enrichment classes where we do free education programs, financial literacy [and] job readiness."
Ellwood adds there are a lot more local families in need in the Pittsburgh area than people realize.

Niecy Dennis White, founder of Work Force Development Global Alliance, said the organization helps young people in Pittsburgh and Kenya become employable.
Dennis White says their 2 Steps 2 Work program has, "two components. Step one is to help young people ages 13-25 to get along...Step two is to get ahead," by getting them through school and into the work force.
She adds their programs are helping young people in Homewood and Homestead.
Dennis White says they have had success with the program and used the example of one student who dropped out of school, but after going through the program, there are now at the University of Pittsburgh on a $90,000 scholarship.
