Woman Struck, Killed By FedEx Truck In Ligonier
LIGONIER (KDKA) -- A woman was struck and killed by a FedEx truck just minutes after dropping off children at a preschool in Westmoreland County on Wednesday afternoon.
First responders and the Westmoreland County Coroner's Office were called to the scene at North Market and East Church Streets in Ligoner at 9:06 a.m.
It happened just out front of the Covenant Presbyterian Church.
According to Ligonier Valley Police, 54-year-old Pamela Barkley, of New Florence, had just taken some children to a nearby preschool. As she was walking, she was struck by the FedEx truck traveling north and pinned underneath.
The driver, a maintenance crew that happened to be nearby, and several other people who witnessed the crash tried lifting the truck to free her. They even brought in a Bobcat machine to help lift the vehicle.
However, Barkley died at the scene.
"It was an unfortunate accident with a very bad ending," said Ligonier Borough Police Chief John Berger. "Can't go into too much detail; it just looks like it was an unfortunate accident."
State police and Ligonier police are investigating. A team from FedEx was also called to the scene to conduct their own investigation.
