Lemieux Reinforces Bylsma's Resume, Says Ownership Proceeding Swiftly But Thoroughly
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle, along with the rest of the Pittsburgh Penguins' ownership team, were nose deep in meetings for a third straight day on Friday following the announcement that Ray Shero had been relieved of his duties as general manager earlier in the day.
But Lemieux took a few minutes to call KDKA's Bob Pompeani back and reinforced the resume of head coach Dan Bylsma.
Lemieux said he is a good coach and the longest-tenured coach in team history.
He said the job of the new general manager, whomever that might be, will be to evaluate Bylsma's performance based on the entire resume.
When asked, could Bylsma be back behind the bench, Lemieux told Pompeani that he absolutely could, it's up to the new general manager; but look at Bylsma's resume, teams would line up to get him.
As far as a new general manager, Lemieux said the meetings will continue, that determination has not been made, and they will hope to proceed swiftly but thoroughly.
Lemieux said as far as the team is concerned, the ingredients were not enough to produce winning results in the playoffs. He said they need more speed and more grit, which was in shorter supply this past year.
Lemieux said there is no immediate timetable on hiring the new general manager, but again, it will be a thorough process.
