Lawrenceville Shop 'n Save handed down consumer alert by Allegheny Co. Health Department

Lawrenceville Shop 'n Save receives consumer alert

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Shop 'n Save in Upper Lawrenceville has been hit with another consumer alert by the health department.

An Allegheny County Health Department inspector cited the grocery store located along 56th Street for several violations. Those include selling expired food, poor cleaning and sanitation, malfunctioning plumbing fixtures, and inadequate pest management.

The store has 10 days to fix the issues before another inspection. If it fails again, it can be shut down. KDKA-TV reached out to the owner for comment, but he wasn't available Friday.

Last year, the store was cited for similar issues.

Ervin Davis of Stanton Heights shops regularly at the store, which he said is convenient. He admits he is cautious when he shops after the store was hit with a consumer alert last year.

"Check dates, check packaging, yes," he said.

Judy Martini said she's not surprised. She's been an unsuspecting victim of a number of these violations, adding she's forced to go elsewhere to purchase meat.

"I've bought ground meat from here, the leaner stuff," Martini said. "Then you open it up, you look in the middle and it's all brown and yucky looking."
