Last 2 'Greensburg 6' Members Sentenced To Prison
GREENSBURG (KDKA) – Two members of the so-called "Greensburg 6" were sentenced to prison Monday morning.
Peggy Miller was sentenced to 35-74 years in prison while Robert Masters was sentenced to 30-70 years.
In December, Miller, 30, and Masters, 39, pleaded guilty to third-degree homicide, criminal conspiracy and kidnapping charges.
The two were among six roommates found guilty of torturing and stabbing Jennifer Daugherty to death.
Daugherty was trusting young woman who was mentally challenged and thought the six involved were her friends.
"They had every opportunity," said Daugherty's sister Joy Burkholder. "They had numerous opportunities to help themselves and help Jennifer -- they chose not to."
Both Masters and Miller addressed the court apologizing and asking for forgiveness.
"It wasn't an apology," Burkholder said. "They were sorry they got caught, sorry they were sentenced, sorry that they're stuck in jail -- not doing what they want."
Masters and Miller's defense asked Judge Rita Hathaway to take into consideration their clients' fear of being beaten by the others involved, difficult childhoods and limited intellectual capacity.
Hathaway responded saying," I'm not going to buy for one second you were afraid of what was going to happen to you. I don't know or care what their IQs were. They could of picked up a phone and saved Jennifer's life, chose not to do it."
Miller and Masters are the last of the "Greensburg 6" to go through the court process.
Amber Meidinger, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and was sentenced to 40 to 80 years in prison.
Previously, it took a jury just under four hours to condemn 26-year-old Ricky Smyrnes to death.
Smyrnes showed no emotion as he learned that he would be joining the nearly 200 other inmates on Pennsylvania's death row. He was the alleged ringleader of the group.
Melvin Knight is on death row after pleading guilty in April of 2012.
Angela Marinucci is serving life in prison after being convicted in May of 2011.
