East Busway in Pittsburgh reopens 1 week after landslide

1 week after landslide, East Busway in Pittsburgh reopens

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) —The MLK Jr. East Busway reopened on Friday at 5 p.m., Pittsburgh Regional Transit said.

Crews placed 34 concrete barriers and 21 concrete blocks to help shore up the area after a landslide on Oct. 11. One lane of the busway is currently open.

"Buses traveling through the area will use the lane farthest from the hillside, and all vehicles will be restricted to 25-miles-per-hour," PRT said in a news release.

A water main break on Oct. 11 prompted the landslide, which brought a mix of mud, dirt, and trees down onto the busway from above on Brereton Street in the city's Strip District neighborhood. The busway was temporarily closed between the Strip District and Oakland.

Pittsburgh Public Safety officials said the landslide happened due to a water main break on Brereton Street. Crews will continue to conduct assessments to determine when the busway "can return to normal operations," officials said.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit said the busway serves approximately 12,000 riders every weekday.
