Landslide Crashes Into Lawrence County River Leading To Flooding
NEW CASTLE (KDKA)- People had to evacuate their homes when a landslide led to flooding in New Castle.
Rescue crews were responding to a possible structure collapse along Pennsylvania Avenue.
"When we got on scene, we realized Pennsylvania Avenue was under two feet of water," said New Castle Assistant Fire Chief David Joseph.
Joseph went on to say that a hillside slid into Big Run, which runs through Kerr's Trailer Park. The water was dammed up by the slide and spilled over onto Pennsylvania Avenue. Around 500 feet of the street was covered in water.
"All of the residents heard the loud noise," said Joseph. "They came out and walked across the street where it was dry."
Firefighters didn't have to evacuate any of the homes.
The speed of the water was able to break open the dam and the water quickly subsided.
The American Red Cross was called in to help several adults with overnight accommodations.
