Lack Of Victories Over Top-Ranked Opponents Could Hurt Pitt
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - The Pitt men's basketball team has been moving up the rankings throughout the season, but after a 15-point loss Monday night against the visiting Duke Blue Devils and a lack of wins over quality opponents, college basketball writers are already beginning to question the Panthers tournament résumé.
According to CBS Sports college basketball writer Jeff Borzello, Pitt has played only three teams in the RPI top 50, and have lost to each of them in Cincinnati, in Syracuse and against Duke.
Borzello cautions that the Panthers have very few remaining chances to get quality wins over top-ranked opponents as he only sees three more teams on Pitt's schedule in Virginia (Feb. 2), Syracuse (Feb. 12) and Florida State (Feb. 23) that could really help build their résumé.
None of this is to say that the Panthers chances of making the tournament are in jeopardy, as Borzello points out, they'll likely enter the tournament with only five or so losses. The main issue will be the Panthers ranking in the tournament.
Without a few key wins under their belt, Borzello predicts Pitt could be looking at a 6 or 7 seed.
