Keaton Receives Lead Actor Academy Award Nomination

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- Fresh off his big win at the Golden Globes, Michael Keaton received another big honor this morning when the Academy Award nominations were announced.

Keaton, who paid homage to his Pittsburgh roots during his Golden Globes' acceptance speech, is now an Academy Award nominee for Lead Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in "Birdman."

Keaton was raised in a tiny enclave nestled between Robinson and Kennedy Townships.

During his speech at the Globes, Keaton said: "My name is Michael John Douglas. I'm from Forest Grove, Pennsylvania. I am the seventh child of George and Leona Douglas. I can't remember a time when my father didn't work two jobs, my mother wasn't saying the Rosary or going to Mass or trying to take care of seven kids in a rundown farm house."

"To come from the place I come from, my friends and my family, thank you very much. I'm extremely grateful," Keaton added.

The 87th annual Academy Award nominations were announced this morning in Beverly Hills, California, by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The other best actor nominees include: Steve Carell, "Foxcatcher"; Bradley Cooper, "American Sniper"; Benedict Cumberbatch, "The Imitation Game"; and Eddie Redmayne, "The Theory of Everything."

"Birdman" was also nominated for Best Picture.

Also, "Foxcatcher," which garnered several nominations, was filmed here in the Pittsburgh area.

The historic Wilpen Hall, a mansion built in 1899 and set back from Blackburn Road in Sewickley Heights, stood in for the sprawling Philadelphia estate, Foxcatcher Farms.
