KDKA-TV Turkey Fund Puts Public's Generosity To Work
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The KDKA-TV Turkey Fund is in its 33rd year.
Thanks to the partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and other food pantries, your generosity comes to life.
Food banks play a huge role in the lives of those in need.
Rodney Lawyer came to Pittsburgh from central Pennsylvania because he loves the Steelers. However, he found a city that loves him too.
"Food banks and places that they have to feed people, it's very wonderful. It's better than some places that I have been at," Lawyer said.
A disability keeps him from working, but the food bank at the Smithfield United Church of Christ helps keep him going.
"If it wasn't for Rena Thomas and the food bank, I really don't know what I, where I would even be," he said.
Thomas has worked as the business administrator at the church since 1999 and that includes its food bank.
"I don't just hand out a bag of food. I treat the people as though they are going shopping. I ask them, "Would you like to have this? Would you like to have that?'" Thomas said.
Her job is more than ordering food -- it's caring for the person.
"This is all full now, but at the end of my distribution, this will all be gone because I just give it all away. Don't try to save anything," she said.
"She just overwhelms. She's just over-abundant of love and the food too," Lawyer said.
But, she does get to do something special at Thanksgiving.
"I do get the KDKA certificates and I mean they are like -- it's something because people, they will wait for that just like kids in a candy store. 'Oh do you have the certificates? Do you have the certificates?'" she said.
"Without that I am not sure what my wife and I would do. We would end up being without, but because of the food banks, because of KDKA with the Turkey Fund, it's just, it's just overwhelming. It's just so beautiful," Lawyer said.
