KDKA Investigates: Delays Plague City's Major Development Projects
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Building construction has been going great throughout the city, mostly on luxury apartments and hotels.
The same can't be said for the city's three major development sites; the Civic Arena development site, the 178-acre ALMONO site in Hazelwood and the terminal building site in the strip district, which developer Dan McCaffery has been trying redevelop for two and half years.
Sheehan: Have you been frustrated by the slow wheels of progress?
McCaffery: I would be if you didn't say that word, progress. We have made progress.
Thursday the Urban Redevelopment Authority designated McCaffery as the developer to move forward with its plan that still faces another six months of negotiations and approvals.
Over at ALMONO site, construction crews are digging tunnels for infrastructure and clearing the ground for the construction of an access road.
But while Uber is planning to build a test track for driverless cars on the site, there's a shortage of other prospective businesses. Recently, Kennametal withdrew its plans to build a new world headquarters there.
At the Civic Arena site, development has hit the same speed bumps. U.S. Steel scotched its plans for a headquarters, leaving the Penguins to search for a new anchor tenant. They're now preparing the site for the first phase of the development which should be housing. But, plans are uncertain for the rest of the site.
"So we are making progress. It certainly hasn't happened at the pace we wished it would have been we haven't relented either," Pittsburgh City Council member Daniel Lavelle said.
