Kaboly: Steelers Cap Management Has Worked Well
PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- The Steelers made several moves in the past week to get under the salary cap, including giving new contracts to Troy Polamalu and Heath Miller, as well as restructuring Antonio Brown's contract.
Bob Pompeani asked Mark Kaboly of the Tribune-Review if taking salary and turning into signing bonuses is smart for business right now.
"That's what they've done for the past three or four years, and it's, in my opinion, a plan that has worked pretty well over the past couple of years, especially with the salary cap going up this year, expected to go up another $7-10 million next year, and maybe another $10 million after that," Kaboly said.
Kaboly told Pompeani that the Polamalu contract will not hamstring the Steelers long-term.
"The bottom line is this: Troy did not want to take a pay cut this year, he wanted that money that was owed to him," Kaboly said. "He got that and the way the Steelers manipulated things were add two years to his deal, give him his money that he's owed this year, spread that over the life of the contract. It's a one year deal. They can easily cut ties with him next year and not hurt that much."
