President Biden campaigns with Vice President Harris in Pittsburgh on Labor Day

President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris campaign in Pittsburgh on Labor Day

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden visited Pittsburgh for their first joint campaign event since Biden dropped out of the presidential race and Harris accepted the Democratic presidential nomination.

Biden and Harris spoke Monday evening. at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 5 on Pittsburgh's South Side.

"I love Labor Day," Harris said. "I love celebrating Labor Day, and Pittsburgh, of course, is the cradle of the American labor movement. It is the birthplace of AFL, headquarters of Steelworkers, home to Firefighters Local 1 and of course the historic IBEW Local Union 5."

During her remarks, Harris said that U.S. Steel should remain domestically owned, echoing Biden's opposition to the company's planned sale to the Japanese company Nippon Steel. When Biden visited the United Steelworkers headquarters in Pittsburgh earlier this year, he promised that U.S. Steel would remain an American company.

"I've always supported my union, and they know the candidates that support us. That's why we are here and we are hosting Kamala Harris. They understand the work that we do, and they understand the investments it takes to keep us employed," says Joseph Glassbrenner, a Harris supporter.

IBEW member Casey Sciore told KDKA-TV's Mamie Bah that he believes Harris will do more for union workers than former President Donald Trump.

"I don't find Trump to be very supportive of unions and it's good to know that there's someone that will have our back," Sciore said.

The Harris-Walz campaign says the visit to Pittsburgh is part of a Labor Day blitz in battleground states. Before Pittsburgh, Harris spoke with labor union leaders and workers in Detroit
