Jim Craig Discusses 34th Anniversary Of "The Miracle On Ice"
PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) – Goaltender Jim Craig from 1980 USA Hockey gold medal team joined John Phillips Saturday night to discuss the 34th anniversary of one of the most famous upsets in sports history.
In the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y., the USA Men's Hockey Team - made up of mostly collegiate and amateur players - took down a Soviet Union team, which had won six of the previous seven gold medals.
The victory on Feb. 22 was famously dubbed "The Miracle on Ice."
Phillips started the interview by asking about the performance of this year's Team USA.
Craig said, "They played great," but after the loss to Canada, "they didn't have enough time to really regroup."
When asked what he thinks about the state of USA Hockey, he noted, "USA hockey players have gotten a lot more respect because of its talents, which is so important."
John concluded the interview by asking how Team USA managed to beat arguably the best hockey team in the world.
Craig was humble, giving credit to Coach Herb Brooks' vision, but said, "We all had dreams of playing in the NHL, we started that journey together and really stuck together as a team.
