IUP Homecoming Much Tamer Than Out-Of-Control St. Patrick's Day Celebrations
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It was a beautiful weekend on the Indiana University of Pennsylvania campus, perfect for a homecoming celebration.
But there were fears the campus could erupt, following an out-of-control St. Paddy's Celebration.
By most accounts, that didn't happen.
"We had a nice, quiet evening," said IUP Spokesperson Michelle Frying. "Police reported no additional arrests connected with homecoming."
It's in stark contrast to IUP's St. Patrick's Day celebration, when hundreds of students took over the streets and did battle with police. Police resorted to pepper spraying the partiers before getting them under control. The university says they avoided that behavior for homecoming.
"There were no major incidents, no major arrests, no major injuries," said Frying.
Even so, police responded to about 96 calls this weekend and 25 people were arrested. But they still say it was much better than St. Patrick's Day.
"There was a lot of police," said IUP student Nick Walter. "Definitely a heavy police presence, everybody noticed it. But it really didn't' deter from going out. It just made 'em act a little more smarter, safer."
One man was arrested for storming a fire truck Saturday night, but university officials say it was an isolated incident quickly brought under control.
Beyond that, the university wants it to be known that they kept student behavior under control over the weekend.
