SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) - A warehouse on the South Side was destroyed after a fire broke out Sunday night.
It broke out just before 7 p.m. at a warehouse in the 500 block of Bingham Street, and it took crews almost three hours to bring it under control.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it appears that the flames and water destroyed the stoves, refrigerators and other items inside The Appliance Warehouse.
Crews set up white sawhorses to block off the road. Fallen bricks and glass now line the sidewalk and street below.
Fire Chief Darryl Jones said the flames caused a wall to collapse and he couldn't allow his crews to enter the building.
"This is a very stubborn fire," said Chief Jones. "The reason it's so stubborn and difficult this time is because the building is very unstable. I am not going to send my people in the fire at this time."
Chief Jones said more than 60 firefighters attacked the blaze for several hours, dousing the building with water from every angle.
The flames could be seen for miles and the fire attracted many onlookers from the nearby factories and homes.
"The flames were wild, the smoke was large, it was going everywhere, smoke was going all over the street," said Chase McIntosh, a witness.
The items inside the warehouse now sit in several inches of water. One of the company's owners declined to talk on camera to KDKA, but could be seen escorting fire investigators around the property.
