Impending winter weather threatens holiday travel

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Though the weather outside may be turning frightful, traveling Thursday at Pittsburgh International Airport was relatively easy and dare I say, delightful.

Though a few cancelations were on the board early Thursday morning for flights to cities like Denver, Minneapolis and Toronto, most people heading out of Pittsburgh Thursday saw short TSA lines and flights still leaving on time.

This ease of travel is expected to change, however, as the weather continues to shift and a massive cold front moves into the region.

Weather watches and warnings are already in effect for the next several days and the Governor's office even released a statement urging Pennsylvanians to pay attention to weather forecasts and stay alert for rapidly changing conditions this holiday weekend.

Experts also say to check out your airline's weather cancelation policies and be flexible with travel if you can.

Tonia Trigg, from Ohio, decided to cut her family's Florida trip short this week to beat the weather home.

"We actually were supposed to come in Christmas Eve morning, but they emailed us and said because of the storms coming in that it would be a good idea to change our flight and gave us two options. So, we cut our trip a little early and came back today," she said.

Allie Mock, of Pittsburgh, changed her flight to California from Friday to Thursday to get out ahead of the storm.

"We actually had tickets for tomorrow and we had to move them today, so defiantly we were not expecting it. The weather is always an issue I feel like when you are traveling, so I am not too worried, but at least we have a better flight than going tomorrow," Mock added.

Again, flexibility is key this holiday season, so be open to changing travel plans if you can.
