Crash Shuts Down I-79 Northbound
BUTLER COUNTY (KDKA) -- A crash shut down northbound lanes of I-79 in Butler County on Saturday morning.
It happened just before 9 a.m. near the Zelienople exit.
The crash involved a Honda Accord and a pick-up truck.
According to Lieutenant Doug Pickett with the Harmony Fire District, the Honda Accord was "split in half, right down the center of the vehicle." The pick-up truck had front-end damage.
Pickett says when first responders arrived on the scene, the driver of the Accord had been ejected from the vehicle and was in the median. The driver's current condition is unknown.
The pick-up truck driver suffered minor injuries and was able to walk away from the crash, but he was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
The cause of the crash has not officially been determined, but the initial investigation suggests the driver of the Accord crossed the median and may have been struck by the pick-up truck.
"Judging by the damage, the guard rail, the vehicles involved and the tire tracks in the median, it appears that the driver of the Accord may have crossed the median and was contacted by the GMC pick-up," Pickett said.
All northbound lanes were closed for several hours, causing some heavy congestion in the area. PennDOT announced around 2:15 p.m. that the scene had been cleared.
