Teen Arrested, 1 Sought In Shooting Death Of 17-Year-Old Girl
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- Pittsburgh Police say one teenager has been arrested and another is being sought in the shooting death of a teenage girl last month in Homewood.
Police and the fugitive task force arrested 16-year-old Steven Cansler at a home in East Liberty early Wednesday morning.
Cansler is being charged as an adult in the Sept. 17 homicide of 17-year-old Daija McCall. He will face a list of charges including, criminal homicide, robbery and criminal use of a communications device.
When Cansler was arrested, officials also found a gun at the home. For that, police say he will also face firearms violations.
Authorities also went to a second address in the city's Perry North neighborhood and didn't find the second suspect there, but arrested a man on drug charges.
The name of the second suspect is not being released at this time, but police continue to look for him.
A witness told police that McCall, a sophomore at Carrick High School, was trying to sell half a kilo of cocaine. Cansler told police he was the middleman of a drug deal between McCall and two men he knew.
In the criminal complaint, Cansler admitted he was aware that the two men were planning to rob McCall of the drugs. He told police one of the men told him the deal went bad, when McCall pulled out a gun after one of the would-be robbers showed her his money.
Police say a Shot Spotter notification in the area, indicated at least 11 shots had been fired. McCall was found lying on a sidewalk near the intersection of Mount Vernon and Belmar Streets in Homewood. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police found drugs in a bag next to McCall's body, a gun and a cell phone. Police say the cell phone belonged to one of the men who planned to rob McCall. Detectives used information from the phone to gather information for their investigation.
Pittsburgh police executed a second search warrant at a home in the city's Perry North neighborhood on Wednesday, but they didn't find the second suspect. So far, they haven't released his name.
