Homewood Church Celebrates 95th Anniversary

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- For more than nine decades, this has been their mission: "A neighborhood church, one who reaches out but our doors are always open."

The Baptist Temple church celebrated its 95th anniversary over the weekend. Former State Representative Joe Preston Jr. is a member -- and a regular usher on Sunday mornings.

"The Baptist Temple is the epitome of what exemplifies a neighborhood church. We have stayed in this neighborhood. Most of the members of this church live within two miles. A lot of people still walk here," Preston said.

While some have moved away from Homewood -- and avoided the tough issues, the Baptist Temple says it will continue to work in the neighborhood.

"It has really grown. We continue to stabilize, but we are going to stay right here in the community. We are not moving out," Preston said.
