Hill District Students Make Holiday Cards For Soldiers, Nursing Homes

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Armed with lots of supplies, like construction paper and markers, some young students spent the morning making cards.

On them were little messages and colorful pictures of holiday hope.

The Pre-K and kindergarten students at St. Benedict the Moor school in the Hill District were more than happy to show off their hard work.

"A snowman, gifts, a Christmas tree," said one student.

About a dozen volunteers from HJ Heinz Company helped the children. The event was part of the foundation's effort to give back to the community.

"Holiday cards are really important," said Jenece Upton with the HJ Heinz Company Foundation. "A lot of people don't get them every year, so we wanted to give to an organization where we thought the cards would have a great impact."

All of the homemade cards will be sent to soldiers stationed overseas and to local nursing homes. The principal, though, hopes that the students who made the cards really take away an important lesson.

"We are a Catholic school," said heather Hilterman with the school. "So we do foster Christian values and going out and sharing and making other people happy is so important to us and the students love to do those kind of activities."

During all the arts and crafts, the students also had time to meet a special visitor.

The HJ Heinz Company Foundation hopes to make this a yearly tradition.
