High Winds Cause Widespread Damage, Power Outages
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) --- High winds whipped across southwestern Pennsylvania Wednesday night and Thursday morning, causing damage and knocking out power to thousands of homes.
As of 7:15 a.m., Duquesne Light was reporting outages to more than 2,000 customers.
Here's the latest Duquesne Light outage numbers:
- Scott Twp. - 1157
- Whitehall - 408
- Bloomfield - 327
- Wilmerding - 310
West Penn Power was reporting more than 3,000 of its own customers in Allegheny County without power. In addition, more than 1,000 customers were without power in Washington and Greene Counties.
Here's the latest West Penn Power outage numbers:
- 1,757 - Allegheny Co.
- 1,668 - Greene Co.
- 1,309 - Washington Co.
- 1,226 - Westmoreland Co.
- 656 - Butler Co.
- 356 - Fayette Co.
- 208 - Indiana Co.
The National Weather Service issued several advisories, warning of strong winds that may be able to blow down limbs, trees and power lines.
There were reports of wind gusts as high as 60 miles per hour in some places overnight.
High winds toppled an 80-foot tall tree onto a house on Huron Avenue in McCandless.
Earlier, high winds were blamed for the collapse of part of a wall at the former New Granada Theater in Pittsburgh's Hill District. No injuries were reported.
The whipping winds caused a 100 foot tree came crashing down onto a van overnight in Point Breeze.
Maxine Claybrook lives along North Murtland Street in Point Breeze. She was asleep around 3 a.m. when the sounds woke her up.
"It sounded like explosions three times and my lights went out and a said, 'Oh shoot, we're not gonna have any lights,'" Claybrook said.
Early Thursday morning, the Public Parking Authority of Pittsburgh announced the Mon Wharf is closed until further notice as a result of the Flood Advisory issued for the Ohio River.
