Heavy Rains Cause Flash Flooding In Parts Of Area

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A quick-hitting storm moved through the South Hills Saturday evening, drenching several areas with more than an inch of rain in less than half an hour.

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning and Flood Advisory, both of which have been allowed to expire.

Scott Township, Carnegie, Heidelberg and Green Tree appeared to be the hardest hit areas.

One person told KDKA-TV News everything was bone dry, and then about 8:30 p.m., the skies opened up and the rain came down hard and fast. It ended just as fast as it began, but the damage was done.

Flash flooding appeared to have been caused when sewers backed up, because they were unable to handle the excessive amounts of water.

Route 50 in Scott Township was closed for several hours because of high water. The road is now reopened.

A number of homeowners reported basement flooding.

One homeowner said flash flooding is a chronic problem in her neighborhood made worse when it rains hard and fast.

"When it rains very hard, something's a matter that it backs up inside the house first and then my driveway," said homeowner Eddy.

A spokeswoman for Allegheny County said there were no evacuations and no serious injuries she was aware of.

A swift water boat rescue team was also put on standby during the rains, but did not have to jump into action.
