Refugee Family Moves Into Habitat For Humanity Home In Penn Hills

PENN HILLS (KDKA) – After escaping war-torn Congo to a refugee camp in Tanzania and eventually moving to the US, a local family is ready to start over in a brand new Penn Hills home.

The Sabimana family had been living in the Pittsburgh projects with their three children and grandparents. They say their home had been broken into several times in the past year as well.

But thanks to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh and several donations, they're officially homeowners.

"I'm so … excited to get the keys to the house today," said Madeleine Sabimana. "I'm happy, yeah, I can't say that enough."

In addition to several donations from Chase Bank and Thrivent Financial, the family also worked more than 350 hours to help build their home as a "down payment."

They will also pay an interest-free mortgage of about $500 per month. The money from their mortgage will actually go to the "Fund for Humanity," which will help pay for future Habitat projects.

"We plan on building a couple more homes, especially in Penn Hills," said Maggie Withrow, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity in Pittsburgh.
