Growing Florida Retirement Community Features Unique Drill Team Club
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Many retirement communities have clubs. But there's a pretty unique one at a place called "The Villages" in Florida.
We caught up with the "The Villages' Precision Golf Cart Drill Team."
It sounds odd until you realize golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation there. Whether you play golf or not, it's how people get around. Some of them are pretty fancy.
"There's a multitude of golf carts and why not have a golf cart drill team," said Phil English, club member.
So just like a college band on a football field, the drill team performs synchronized routines for audiences, minus the musical instruments.
We joined them for a practice at 9 a.m. one sunny Florida morning.
"Slow down, slow! C'mon guys, slow!" commanded "Drill Sergeant" Irene Howe over a walkie-talkie.
She warned KDKA's David Highfield and photographer Ian Smith to keep a distance.
"You're liable to get your toes run over," said Howe with a chuckle.
Howe says they normally get standing ovations from the crowds.
"They love it when we drive really close, and it looks like we're going to crash or lock wheels or whatever. That's what they like. They like the danger of it," said Howe.
Highfield asked: "Have there been mishaps?"
English said: "There have been mishaps but just kind of fender benders."
But they say they're having a blast and enjoy doing something that makes people smile.
"They can't believe we actually do this," Howe said with a grin.
