Jeannette City School District requiring adult supervision for elementary students at high school football games

Greensburg Salem, Jeannette school districts launch new attendance policy for football games

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- In a letter sent out to parents and guardians in August, the Jeannette City School District has implemented a new policy for elementary-age children attending football games and events at McKee Stadium.

The policy states "No child… will be permitted entry to the stadium unless they are with an adult who is responsible for their supervision throughout the event."

Matt Jones, the superintendent of the Jeannette City School District, told KDKA-TV that it's all about liability and safety. He also said that while kids are welcome at the stadium with an adult accompanying them, if they show up without supervision, they will be turned away at the gate.

KDKA-TV spoke with several people who live in the area on Tuesday, and they think this is a good idea.

"It can't hurt anything right," said Josh from Greensburg.

"You know, you want your kids to be safe and you want to have an eye on them whenever they're at these large social gatherings where they can get lost, or sometimes they can leave the football field if they're not being watched. You never know what's going to happen."

"I think it's good for the younger children because a lot of times parents just drop their kids off and say alright not my problem for a little bit," said Tammy Gallo.

"I have high schoolers and they are pretty well-behaved. I feel like they should be able to go to games and hang out with their friends and watch and support the school district. But the young ones, definitely. I think they should have supervision."

Several schools in the area, including Greensburg Salem and Hempfield, both have similar K-6 student policies at their stadiums and superintendent Jones said that there were no issues with the new policy during Jeannette's first home game last Friday.
