Girls Rock Science: KDKA, CMU Team Up To Teach Girls About STEM Fields

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- On Sept. 24 and 25, girls are going to rock the Carnegie Science Center!

KDKA and the Science Center are, once again, partnering up in an effort to educate young women about science, technology, engineering, and math and to drive this youthful market into STEM related careers. Currently, STEM fields are dominated by men, causing young women to shy away from participating despite being interested in careers in these fields.

Now, the Carnegie Science Center and KDKA are working to change that in Pittsburgh by increasing interest in these subjects.

Title and presenting sponsors, Williams Energy and the Verizon Foundation, along with a number of other businesses and organizations, are coming together to demonstrate real life job fields within the STEM category and how careers in these areas are the future of the World.

With over 35 different booths and exhibits, the main goal for participating sponsors is to educate, influence and inspire Pittsburgh's youth to become more active and aware of STEM professions. Additionally, there will be 13 Host School Districts from throughout the Pittsburgh area with exhibits to demonstrate what students have been learning in the classroom related to science, technology, engineering and math.

Students and families in attendance will have hands on interaction with a construction zone, mock crime scene, chemical reactions, 3D printers, a coding booth, robots and more! Girls Rock Science promises to be a weekend of influence, discovery, innovation, education and fun! Both students and adults alike are sure to walk away with a newfound appreciation for science, technology, engineering and math; along with a positive outlook for the future of these industries as unique and rewarding careers.
