Girls Rock Science At Carnegie Science Center
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Girls rocked the Carnegie Science Center this weekend.
It's an effort to get more girls excited about science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM.
And a star from a top-rated TV show was there to help spark the girls' imaginations.
With many boys pursuing careers in STEM fields, girls sometimes shy away. But the Carnegie Science Center was hoping to change that.
The Williams Pipeline Company was one of the sponsors.
"We have women that are in the industry, however we see that there's a disparity," said Sheri Chamblit with Williams Pipeline Company. "There's not enough women. So we like to get out there and promote the opportunity for girls to learn about science, math, technology."
One local girl had a real eye opener. She got to track Hurricane Joaquin on KDKA's Mobile Weather Lab weather tracker with meteorologist Ron Smiley.
"That's really cool," said Katya Chernyshev. "I've never seen it before. It's really cool I feel like I never would have been able to see it if I didn't come today."
And the girls got to meet with Renee Felice Smith. She's the actress who plays a respected intelligence analyst on CBS' NCIS-Los Angeles.
"I'm thrilled to be a part of it," she said. "Just to know that I could possibly positively influence a younger generation and get them motivated to join the STEM field."
