Extreme Cold Also Posing Challenges For Utility Crews

HOMESTEAD (KDKA) -- Utility crews throughout the region have their work cut out for them as the extreme cold continues to pose challenges.

KDKA's Kym Gable went to Pittsburgh's Arlington neighborhood where nearly a dozen Columbia Gas trucks were seen in the neighborhood.

A small leak was detected on Syrian Street, but the bigger problem was low gas pressure caused by the frigid temperatures.

"I went downstairs and the heat was only on 50," Jillian Canastraro said. "I got a little nervous, but then I thought it's because it was so cold. And I checked with the other neighbors, and they said it was really cold, too."

A Columbia Gas spokesperson told KDKA there were similar problems in Baldwin and Bethel Park in the South Hills.

In Baldwin, two streets were reportedly affected by low gas pressure; and in Bethel Park, residents on five streets were affected. Utility crews were called to the scene there, too.

Meanwhile, emergency crews gave the all clear Tuesday evening for tenants to return to their apartments in Homestead after reports of a gas leak.

The residents evacuated the three-story building on East 9th Avenue for several hours after someone said they smelled natural gas.

But firefighters checked out the building and said they could not find a leak.

Peoples Gas is looking into what may have caused the smell.
