Police Investigating After 2 American Flags Set On Fire At War Memorial

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh Police are investigating vandalism at the Garfield War Memorial.

Back on Oct. 15, authorities say someone tore down two American flags.

Police say the flags were placed on a pile of fallen leaves, doused with lighter fluid and set on fire.

"To do that, burn flags, is very disrespectful," said Ray McGill.

The monument is a tribute to veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam that honors more than 1,000 veterans from the area.

The memorial was relocated about 30 years ago after someone vandalized it then.

"A mixture of resignation and sadness," said Richard Swartz, who works near the memorial. "We saw the charred remains of a couple of flags and little bits of kindling wood that was used to start the fire."

Volunteers in the community take care of the memorial.

Swartz's father was a World War II pilot. Swartz is incensed by the flag burning.

"These are people we should be enshrining and not in anyway desecrating," he said.
