Furry Tails: Dog Day Of Summer

They're called "man's best friend" for a reason.

Dogs are our constant companions.

They cheer us up when we're down or even when we're already happy, they greet us at the door, they're great playmates, they're warm and kind, and love us unconditionally.

That's why, every year, Aug. 26, is set aside as a day to give them thanks. From service dogs, to search and rescue dogs, to police dogs, to everyday household pets.

They are all special. Each and every one of them.

Ask any pet owner, and they'll tell you, they're dog is the best dog. No contest.

It's National Dog Day.

First celebrated in 2004, National Dog Day was founded by animal advocate Colleen Paige and calls attention to animals in shelters across the country that are in desperate need of forever homes.

According to their website, the day "celebrates all dogs, mixed breed and pure."

And the mission is to "help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort."

The hashtag #NationalDogDay has been trending on Twitter all day! Have you posted a photo of your dog yet?
